Toby Slocum is 18 and is learning his craft under the watchful eye of David Rice here at the Kinsale Gourmet Academy.
His motivation for becoming a chef was his mothers awful cooking (his words!) and he reckoned he had to be able to do better than her in the kitchen!
His love for cooking first began when he worked under the wing of Helen Carroll in a restaurant on West Cork. He is delighted to now have David Rice as his mentor and the pair have turned into quite a team. The more corporate groups came to the Kinsale Gourmet Academy for team building activities and days out, the more fun the pair had with them!
David is certainly not afraid to challenge Toby, while all the time imparting him with his knowledge.
Toby was pleasantly surprised at Davids mellow disposition which totally knocks on its head the idea that all chefs are intense & egotistical.
The future looks bright for Toby and we hope he spends many years perfecting his craft here at the Kinsale Gourmet Academy and Ballinacurra House.
He has his sights set on becoming a top chef and also sharing his knowledge with others who have a passion for food. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Toby.
